One of the many specialities of legal work that falls under our litigation service is Youth Law. We work with youth from all over the Eastern Bay of Plenty who need representation in both the Family Court and Youth Court. It’s a rather sensitive situation but if you feel that you need to chat to someone regarding your child/ren we are here to help. When youth under the age of 17 offend or are suspected of offending, they will generally go through the Youth Justice System.
The Youth Justice System and youth litigation differs from general District or Family Court litigation. Youth Court proceedings are private and confidential, and there is an emphasis on representing the views and interests of the child or young person each step of the way so that rangatahi understand what is happening at each of these steps. It is important our rangatahi feel valued, and that they are being heard. While young, more often than not, they understand what is happening around them. This service is generally a government funded resource which pays for the lawyer representing the child/ren, however in some instances this cost may need to be repaid, depending on the circumstances. Our Senior Associate, Lisa Ebbers, is one of the few solicitors in the Bay of Plenty who is able to act for youth in both the Family Court and Youth Court jurisdictions. If you need any help or this has raised any issues for you then please contact Lisa. |
