Shem Otieno

Shem was born and raised in southern Kenya. He is the sixth born in a family of three boys and five girls.  Shem completed his early education in western Kenya, before joining a University in Nairobi where he studied Horticulture.

Sports was a big part of Shem’s early life as he was awarded a football scholarship in secondary school. He played in Kenya premier league after leaving university and left for southern Africa to chase a professional football dream. He joined a club in south east Asia playing in that unique part of the world.

Shem relocated to Hawkes Bay in 2005 to take up a community-based role with Sport Hawkes Bay in Wairoa.  He joined Gisborne Thistle Athletic club mid-season and they ended up winning the Central senior championship. He then shifted to Tauranga to take up a sports facilitator /coordinator role with the then Community Leisure Management company and joined Tauranga city football but then opted to join Arataki Rugby club to take up a new challenge.  At the time they were in the Bay-wide premier men’s competition and Shem ended up playing with them for four years.  He ran youth football coaching clinics for several years in wider Tauranga and umpired social indoor sports for Bay Venues.

Shem joined Steve Franklin’s team at Hamertons in November 2019.  He graduated from Te Piringa – Waikato law school in December 2019 and was admitted to the bar in early May 2020.  While completing his law degree, Shem volunteered at the Baywide Community law, in the housing advocacy team.

Outside work and on the weekends, Shem spends his time with his two daughters and partner Merab.  They enjoy spending time at the beautiful Ohope beach, taking the girls for bike rides and exploring Whakatane.

“I look forward to getting more involved in local community activities especially youth football coaching”.
