Brian Carter


Brian joined the team at Hamertons in 1987 after completing his Law degree at Otago University.

Brian supervises a team of six legal staff and is also responsible for trust account administration as the firms “Trust Account Partner”.

Jude Wilson


Jude Wilson initially joined Hamertons in February 2004 as a Law Clerk after having been a primary school teacher.  Jude undertook study by correspondence to qualify as a Legal Executive and completed her studies in October 2006. In 2008 Jude began a Law degree through the University of Waikato, which she completed in June 2011.  She was admitted to the bar in March 2012.  Following her admission to the Bar she moved into a Staff Solicitor role and was made a Director on 1 April 2016.

Katie Sutherland


Katie graduated from Waikato University in 2012 with a Bachelor of Laws with Honours degree and was admitted to the Bar at the Tauranga High Court in July 2013.

Katie commenced her legal career with Hamertons in May 2013 and following her O.E to the United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and Europe during 2015, Katie returned to Hamertons in 2016.

Saraya Ngatai


Saraya is of Ngati Awa, Ngati Porou, Ngati Maniapoto and Ngai Tahu descent.

Saraya obtained conjoint degrees in Law and Social Sciences (Psychology) from the University of Waikato.  She graduated in 2012 and spent the next two years immersed in Māori Land Law at the Waikato Maniapoto Māori land court, an area of law about which she is very passionate.

Steven Stebbings


Steven Stebbings joined Hamertons in June 2015. Steven completed a Business degree at Massey University before moving to Hamilton to complete a law degree at the University of Waikato.  Following Steven’s studies he was admitted to the New Zealand High Court as a Barrister and Solicitor.

Kyla Johansen


Kyla Johansen graduated from the University of Waikato in 2014 and following her admission to the bar in 2015 joined Hamertons as a staff solicitor, therefore fulfilling her desire to return to her home town of Whakatane after an absence of over 20 years.

Megan Van Westbrook

Legal Executive

Megan qualified as a Legal Executive in 1986 after undertaking two years part time study at Auckland Technical Institute and for the past ten years has been a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Legal Executives.  Megan works independently and is part of Brian Carter’s team.  For over 20 years Megan has been based in our Kawerau office.
